Global Game Jam!

Came and went in a half remembered, dreamlike memory of an exhausting yet exciting weekend of blitz development. The product of said weekend: Flip-Future. Based on the theme of extinction, two factions wage an unending war, pitting the player in the middle, always trying to gain the upper hand, only to have it turned against them. Can you prevent your own extinction? Will the cost of your war not only spell the end of you, but the land you fight for?

Assets by yours truely:
- 3 types of unit-spawning towers in 2 team colours and 2 states (dead / alive).
- 2 kinds of infantry units.
- 2 kinds of hover-tanks (one 3D coming soon).
- 2 animated walkers.
- 4 sprites for HUD (3 tower+unit icons, 1 strength gauge)

In production: 3D version of the blue tank's big brother. More soon.

GPMG - Speedmodeling

As promised, here is the GPMG. Polygon counts vary, if the chamfer on the handle and body are removed and the hidden edges optimized, it can be reduced to around 500. Simple planar mapping on the sides, the texture was found on google and used to block out the shape as well.

Interior Design

Spent a little while designing the internal components of the helmet. Bigger, better detail in a moment, but for now, the basics are all that's needed.

Small Touchups

Several Edits later and: Combined picture back/front - still getting used to the picture upload.

So after a little lunch and a short break, did some light source rendering. Got more of the goodies added to the hull, the tracks for some reason are still being rendered as though they are backface culled.. shouldn't be but oh well, I'll fix that in a lil' bit. Going to add the GPMG mount next and spiff that one up so it can just pop on when it's ready. Next post at... 9-10 o'clock tonight hopefully!

Lynx - A little more

It's been a day or two, and now that I've been able to get some more work done on the Lynx, I decided to take a few minutes to do a render with a skylight to see what it looks like. Pretty spiffy!

Tracks are now in, they absolutely make the vehicle, having a hull and some road wheels just isn't as awesome as a nice beefy track.

Big thanks to Craig for helping me get the path constraint working. A little more of the finer details need to be added and then it's time to mount a GPMG and 50 cal. Look forward to it!

M113 1/2 Lynx On it's Way

Reinforcements have arrived! (C&C 1 reference if anyone was wondering)

So here is the beginning stages of the M113 1/2 'Lynx' that I started some time ago. It will be completed within the week! Now if only I could get my previous saves back from the depths of corruption and snapshot the version with the tracks, both sets of roadwheels, smoke launchers, lights and light bars.

Still undecided what kind of turret will go on top. Maybe traditional light MG or I may draw up a new turret set and pop that on. This platform will also become the showcase of my new extended armour plating that I thought up a little while ago while driving on the highway. If I have time, I'll high-tech it up with a little Shirow Masamune inspiration!

Retro

This post is going to be a little more Retro than the last, a visit back to Doga L3 CGA. A nice introductory program, lets you get a feel for moving around in 3D space as well as placing objects in x-y-z.

Lots of built in textures and objects, but no support for individual vert pushing and pulling. Everything in this picture is comprised of parts available in the Doga editor itself, except the helmet, those are completely custom.

There is also a separate tool to add a basic kind of bone to allow for posing, but I never used it, I preferred to just to rotate and move their parts into place. Come to think of it, the characters haven't changed too much over the years, but they have come a long way in their design and practicality.
